Angsana Riads Collection

Angsana is a hotel brand that caters to the modern traveller seeking style and authenticity. Comprising contemporary and chic retreats, Angsana properties are designed to create and deliver vibrant enlivening experience for guests at work and at play. Each Angsana hotel, resort, spa and retail gallery exudes the spirit and conscience of its environment, while offering a strong sense of individuality infused with our Asian heritage. Facilities and services at all Angsana properties are focused on enabling guests to draw the most of every moment.
Step back in time as the Angsana Riads Collection brings out the history buff in you. Our heritage riads are located in the precincts of Old Medina. Each riad has been restored to its glory by local artisans. Discover the ancient walled city on foot and get a lesson in history.
Mix romance with adventure in a fascinating city. Pop the question on a rooftop terrace under the stars, over a candle light dinner. Explore the countryside and trek in the Atlas Mountains. Watch history unfold before your eyes on a heritage walk.

Riad Si Said
The oldest property in the collection, Riad Si Said is actually three riads linked together. Only a short stroll from the Dar Si Said Museum, it evokes the region’s history. The largest of the buildings served as the home of a wealthy Marrakech family. Its walls and zellij (hand-laid mosaic floors) date back to the 1880s. Angsana spent quite a bit to preserve the structure — in most cases to stunning effect. The zellij in the central courtyard and surrounding hallways are exquisite. And the seven rooms and suites retain a number of original details — an archway here, tilework there — along with a collection of Moroccan artifacts.
Of course, the property’s age presents a few challenges. For one thing, there’s no elevator, and the steps can be quite hard to maneuver. They’re very steep and uneven in places, windy and narrow in others. All in all, though, Said has much to offer, including a pool and an expansive rooftop terrace complete with lounge chairs and a Jacuzzi. It’s also home to Angsana’s excellent Moroccan restaurant and its superb tagines.

Riad Dar Zaouia
A few doors down from Said you’ll find Riad Dar Zaouia ("palace for retreat” in Arabic). The newest property in the collection, it too has seven rooms (including one of my favorites, Volubilis, a spacious suite with a huge bathroom and private terrace). All in all, though, it’s smaller in scale and quieter. I especially like the charming rooftop terrace — a garden-filled space with lounge chairs, small tables and a couples spa tent.

Riad Blanc
The nearby eight-room Riad Blanc has an Arab-Andalucian theme that makes it the most romantic hotel in the collection. The white-and-cream–washed central courtyard, with its archways, elegant plasterwork, orange trees, intricate ironwork and turquoise plunge pool, is anchored by an enchanting tiled fountain. The rooftop terrace has two levels with plenty of shade — so it’s a welcome retreat on especially hot days.

Riad Tiwaline
Within Riad Bab Firdaus, the Angsana spa offers Asian-inspired treatments and a hammam.
Tiwaline means "beautiful small eyes,” and in this instance it may well be a clever play on words. The five-room riad seems to hold less light than its siblings. The hammam, for example, is outfitted with black marble floors and limestone walls. The public spaces and rooms are filled with Berber antiques and textiles. Berber-style cedarwork pops up here and there throughout the premises. That doesn’t mean the place lacks warmth, though: All the rooms have traditional fireplaces.

Riad Bab Firdaus
Riad Bab Firdaus has seven rooms, a small plunge pool and a Thai restaurant (a nod to Angsana’s roots, no doubt). It’s also home to the Angsana spa — which is staffed by Thai therapists, all trained at Banyan Tree’s Phuket academy. And the treatment menu draws heavily on Asian healing modalities. It does, however, bow to local custom with a hammam ritual and bodywork that incorporate the ubiquitous Moroccan argan oil.

Riad Lydines
Unlike Said, Dar Zaouia, Blanc, Tiwaline and Firdaus, which are all within walking distance of each other, the seven-room Riad Lydines is 10 minutes away by taxi, in the ancient kasbah of the medina. Decorated in a vibrant color scheme, its walls adorned with modern art, this riad is not only the most contemporary, it’s also the most stylish of the lot. It also has one of the largest pools in the medina, and the rooftop terrace is outfitted with a golden Berber tent.
